Substance Misuse

Queen’s Road Project
Grant:            £8,000

The Queens Road area of Bristol suffered from problems such as litter, illegal parking and speeding drivers, poor lighting and public drinking from both adults and young people.  This multi-faceted project aimed to improve the area by tackling these things through a combination of diversionary activities and practical measures.  In terms of helping alcohol misusers seek advice, George printed leaflets detailing the nearby alcohol and drug support organisation, HAWKS.  Local shopkeepers then agreed to put these leaflets into carrier bags when alcohol was purchased.  As a result, HAWKS have been approached by several alcohol users who have asked for help to control their addiction.

Friday L8
Grant:            £3,300

To combat the problem of underage drinking in public causing a nuisance and lots of litter in Pewsey, Friday L8 was set up to offer a warm, safe, exciting and alcohol-free club for young people on a Friday night.  Run by just two volunteers, there has been a sharp decline in anti-social behaviour and underage drinking in the town centre on Fridays since it began.  According to Wiltshire Constabulary, monthly incidents of anti-social behaviour have halved from twenty-eight in September 2005 to fourteen in February 2006.  This decline correlates with the growth in number of young people who attend the club, from twenty-one in October 2005 to sixty-eight in January 2006.  Local people have commented that it has made a ‘dramatic difference’ to the centre of Pewsey on a Friday evening
